There are two broad application areas depending upon whether MEMflakes™ are read through the airways, aka contactless in the case of RFID, or read in direct connection with a readers, similar to a lock and key.
Contactless (RFID)
Access control – access control is a very simple application in which MEMflakes™ could offer powerful security either to a building or network. In essence, a MEMflake could become a unique IP address for things.
Identification – MEMflakes are ideal for identification cards of all kinds including passports, driver’s licenses, credit cards, payment cards, and the like. The system can be as simple as matching a particular MEMflakes signature to a list of known valid signatures and the system can also be used off-line. For example, mobile systems, for such things as border patrols, could carry a list of valid signatures which is refreshed regularly. Since that list does not need to be secure, the mobile system can not be used to compromise the security. Additionally, it is conceivable to put a MEMflake in every valid passport/ID card and share the valid list of signatures with any interested party without compromising security.
Anti-counterfeiting – Using MEMflakes is a very cost effective way to provide for the security of all types of products, documents, and other items to verify their authenticity. For example, MEMflakes would provide unique, unclonable, cost effective serial numbers for drug packages. The serial number could be read at the pharmacist before drugs are dispensed and checked against and list of valid serial numbers the manufacturer posted on the internet.
MEMflakes can be used in a lock and key system where the MEMflake becomes an irreproducible key. The reader would look for a given key(s) and only open the lock if it readers the appropriate MEMflake. Any type of security that uses a lock and key type system could benefit from using MEMflakes.
