MEMS-based Security... cost effective... simple... secure
Applications

MEMflakes™ have broad application appeal wherever authentication is required. Whether your requirements include access control, identification, anti-counterfeiting, or lock-and-key, MEMflakes™ should be among the approaches you consider.

Access control – access control is a very simple application in which MEMflakes™ offer powerful security either for physical entry into a building or token-based access to a network. In either case a card or pod containing a MEMflake™ is presented to a reader that extracts the spectrum from the chip. The reader then either compares the spectrum with locally stored information or sends the spectrum over a network to a master database for comparison. If a match is found either access is granted (1-layer security) or a password is requested and matched to the spectrum (2-layer security).

IdentificationMEMflakes™ are ideal for identification cards of all kinds including passports, driver’s licenses, credit cards, payment cards, etc. The uniqueness and unclonability properties of the technology ensure that the credential being proffered is not a forgery. As with access control, the spectrum obtained by a reader is compared, either locally or over a network, against a set of previously stored spectra. In the case of a mobile reader application with local data, valid spectra can be downloaded at regular intervals to ensure up-to-date matching. In addition, data can be shared between companies or local/state/federal/national jurisdictions.

Anti-counterfeiting – Using MEMflakes™ is a very cost effective way of authenticating high value items. Such items include high value personal goods such as handbags or luggage, automotive aftermarket parts, aerospace parts, power turbomachinery, pharmaceuticals, etc. Such "e-pedigree" applications are made much more secure with MEMflakes™.

Lock-and-key – Certain hardware, such as secure computer systems, weapons or weapon systems, secure communications gear, and the like, require that the user use a "key" in order to activate the system. MEMflakes™ provide a very secure approach to the problem of key cloning or counterfeiting because of their inherent resistance to duplication. High sensitivity hardware systems such as those above can be fitted with a compact reader that can be trained to recognize a given MEMflake™ key or set of keys and provide system access when a valid key is presented. As with access control, an additional layer of security can be derived from the use of a PIN or password in conjunction with the MEMflake™.

No matter what your application, if you need simple, inexpensive, and robust authentication, Veratag
MEMflakes™ and readers should be on your list of solutions.
